About us

Our Mission

To build and sustain a network of individuals, businesses, government agencies, public officials and not-for-profit organizations that are committed to a system of service to the homeless including prevention and intervention, and leading to permanent housing.

Our Vision

To create a network of care that will assist the homeless and near homeless to break the cycle of being homeless.

Our History

The Central Louisiana Coalition to Prevent Homelessness was established in 1992 to address the issues of homelessness and to assess the needs of homeless or near homeless persons in Region VI. The Principal organizations involved in this effort included private and nonprofit agencies, state federal and local governments, religious service organizations, school boards, former homeless individuals and other concerned citizens. Today the Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition or CLHC has grown to over 50 active members and a strong board of directors that strive to achieve the goal set forth in the beginning, to prevent homelessness in Central Louisiana.

Who are the homeless of Central Louisiana?

They are more than just some change handed through a car window. More than an afterthought from your daily news program or an article in your favorite newpaper. They are men, women and children, entire families and veterans who fought to protect our freedoms.  The homeless of our community need your help and understanding.

Become an advocate for the Homeless in Central Louisiana and help us create a stronger network of care to break the cycle of homelessness in someone's life. You can help by joining the CLHC in membership. Your generious membership donation will allow us to continue our work in the community.  Join us on the second Wednesday of each month for our Public Membership meetings. Meetings are held at Emmanuel Baptist Church Conference Room 106, located at 430 Jackson St in Alexandria.

Homelessness Facts:

  • 1.35 million children are homeless, representing 39% of the overall homeless population.
  • Almost 40% of the homeless are families.
  • In January 2005, CLHC held an actual Street Count of the Homeless population in 4 parishes, more than 300 people were homeless that night.
  • During the 05/06 school year the Avoyelles, Grant, and Rapides Parish School Board Consortium served over 4600 homeless children and youth.
  • For a family to afford a two bedroom apartment in this area, if the head of the household earned only minimum wage 67% of their monthly income would be needed just to pay rent.
  • There are often long waiting lists to apply for Section 8 Housing Vouchers or to get into public housing.
  • In a recent survey of 30 cities, 26% of all requests for emergency shelter were unmet due to a lack of resources.
